Dear Electronics Marketer,

The forecast for the Microwave and RF industry is robust with 2007 already shaping out to be a very good year!

RF Design experienced great growth over the past two years with online and print increasing 20%. Thank you for your support. Please take a look at the 2007 calendar as we have some exciting new developments to report.

In March, we will produce a Wireless Standards Wall Chart. The cubicle friendly wall chart will be distributed to our entire audience in March and will also be posted on our Web site www.rfdesign.com. It will be used as a reference to help design engineers navigate through the competing standards. Limited sponsorships are available, so call me quickly for details.

Also new for 2007 are regular product focus reports on RFIC's, Antennas and Switches & Connectors.

Additions to our supplement, Defense Electronics, (starting in February and  polybagged with every other issue of RF Design) will now include features on Medical Electronics, Opto electronics, Switches & Connectors, Synthetic Instruments, Data Buses and Sensing & Security.

The New Year is also a great time for you to take stock of your own messaging. Are your ads over-filled with technical specifications and other features or do they offer solid solutions. As Professor Emeritus Theodore Leavitt famously told his students at Harvard Business School, "People Don't Want A Quarter Inch Drill, They Want a Quarter Inch Hole." The better understanding you have of the challenges your customer's face and how you can help solve them, the more effective your ads will be.

RF Design kicks off the New Year with five feature articles that focus on solutions:

  • This staff written report presents the latest technology advances in the microwave/millimeter wave arena. Unveiled will be new applications that are exploiting improvements in SiP packaging.
  • The Amplifiers article shows how the designer can detect the VSWR conditions using high performance RF logarithmic amplifiers. Innovative new techniques to protect the HPA under VSWR conditions are examined.
  • A compelling article on DSP and FPGA devices, offers a low-cost integrated hardware and software platform that expedites development of software-defined radio (SDR) for a variety of multi-protocol military, public safety and commercial applications.
  • Multi-mode transceiver design can present a challenge to designers. This article shows how advances in WEDGE radio systems offer solutions thru a highly integrated, multi-mode RF transceiver for GSM, EDGE, and WCDMA systems.
  • As Wi-FI continues to proliferate to include items such as cameras, phones, games and even televisions, the need to test Wi-Fi has emerged. Our test and measurement article addresses the need for scalable test methodologies and tools to support Wi FI devices.
  • January also kicks off our supplement Emerging Wireless Technology,  with a focus  on RFID.  Most of the RFID business is booming. The aerospace and defense industries are on a rapid RFID adoption path with substantial benefits anticipated in the next several years.
Surrounded by this compelling editorial, your  solutions ad will offer you an immediate return on your investment.  Please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions, I would love to hear from you.

Best wishes for a happy holiday and New Year.

RF Design January Issue

RF & Microwave/Millimeter Wave Technology Special Report
This staff written report presents the latest technology advances in the microwave/millimeter wave arena. It brings recent developments in RFICs, microwave/millimeter wave high power transistors and integrated passive components. In addition, it unfolds applications that are exploiting improvements in SiP packaging.

Amplifiers
Protecting power amplifiers from VSWR failures

RF/Microwave power amplifiers get damaged under heavy load mismatch conditions, commonly termed as VSWR failure. It is essential to protect the high power amplifier (HPA) from such failures. This article shows how the designer can detect the VSWR condition using high performance RF logarithmic amplifiers and then proposes circuit techniques to protect the HPA under VSWR conditions. Experimental results from a prototype built in the lab are discussed in this article.

Software Radio
Integrated solution eases SDR development

Using DSP and FPGA devices, this article describes a low-cost integrated hardware and software platform that expedites development of software-defined radio (SDR) for a variety of multi-protocol military, public safety and commercial applications.

Analog/RF Front-End
Multi-mode RF transceiver advances WEDGE radio systems

Wireless communications are evolving at a rapid rate. Systems such as GSM, EDGE, and CDMA are being augmented with 3G and WiLAN capabilities, making an efficient and cost-effective multi-mode solution essential. The RF transceiver is a key part of any multi-mode solution. Its design presents several challenges that are magnified when distinctly different modes such as GSM and WCDMA must both be hosted. Traditionally, the problem has been solved using parallel radio chains to serve different frequency bands and operational modes - an approach that is both costly and complex. This article examines some of the challenges related to multi-mode transceiver design, and presents a highly integrated, multi-mode RF transceiver solution for GSM, EDGE, and WCDMA systems.

Test & Measurement
Meeting the testing challenges of emerging Wi-Fi enabled devices

As Wi-Fi continues to proliferate and the number and type of client devices grows to include items such as cameras, phones, games and even televisions, the need to test Wi-Fi enabled devices in emerging product categories becomes increasingly important. The proposed article will address the need for scalable test methodologies and tools to support interoperability of Wi-Fi enabled devices ranging from games to phones to televisions. It will also outline the Wi-Fi Alliance's new approach for station testing and show how this new approach improves the flexibility and scalability of the certification program.
