Power Electronics DVD
NOW AVAILABLE!

Dear Electronics Marketer,

I had an engineering epiphany last month at the Wireless Show while showing a group of engineers a prototype of our Wireless Standards Wall Chart.  It reinforced what I already knew about engineers, that they respond best to visuals, whether they are pictures, graphs or charts. There they stood transfixed, without taking their eyes off the chart for what seemed like an eternity to us "non engineering" types. Silently nodding their heads, they compared, contrasted, synthesized and classified.  When they finally came up for air, they handed me their cards and politely asked me to be sure to send the wall chart when it is ready.

This March, we will unveil the first International Wireless Standards Wall Chart. The cubicle-friendly  chart will be distributed to our entire audience of RF Design and Emerging Wireless Technology, design engineers  and will also be posted on www.rfdesign.com. It will be used as a reference to help navigate through the competing standards from cellular communications to mobile video broadcasting. Appropriate frequency ranges, multiple access methods and modulation schemes will be deployed.  The chart will also provide peak data rate for each, as well as applications served.

New and emerging RF and wireless standards and technology will one day be used in everything from high-speed Internet access and smart homes, to biometric-based wireless networks. These standards are literally changing the technological landscape in which today's microwave and RF engineers work to design, test and verify next-generation systems and subsystems. In the process, they are redefining the world in which we live.

Because nothing like this existed previously, we are sure that this Standards Wall Chart, produced on luxury stock, will be a working tool for years to come. Engineers are likely to personalize this chart, adding their own notes in the margin. As a sponsor, every time an engineer refers to the chart or glances at the wall, it offers you the chance to build your brand and relay your message. All sponsors will receive 100 extra copies to give out to their key clients.

We will also have distribution of this chart at every major trade show including the MTT-S show in June, offering even more exposure to the sponsors.

Additionally, the lineup below for RF Design offers a rich mix of features on Amplifiers, Design Tools, Signal Processing, Microwave/Millimeter Wave Components  and RFICs. Our supplement Emerging Wireless Technology will be entirely devoted to WiMax Technology. Your message aligned with this compelling editorial is sure to be read and acted upon.

Please call me if you would like to see a prototype of the chart.

Amplifiers
OTA testing and its implications on the power amplifier in a GSM mobile system

As over-the-air (OTA) testing gains momentum, more pressure is being exerted on the RF engine in a mobile device to improve its performance in real-world scenarios. No formal specifications have been standardized as of yet for the performance results of a mobile device that has undergone OTA testing. However, the CTIA has established the methods for OTA testing and some network providers have set their own specifications. In this article, the author will discuss OTA testing methods that are used to test a mobile device with focus on the performance parameter that more closely relates to the power amplifier (PA) in a GSM system, the total radiated power (TRP). In addition, a method for evaluating the TRP performance of the PA will be presented. Finally, test results from two GSM PA modules are described.

Design Tools/Software
CAD implementation of DR based oscillator using non-linear analysis

This article describes the concept of modeling along with the simple design equations, characterization and implementation of the DR puck model in oscillator simulation. The equivalent band-stop resonator model along with the transformer ratio is presented that matches closely with the theoretical results. By incorporating the model in the CAD tool, it shows that the oscillator response is more predictable.

Signal Processing
Drivers of multi-antenna signal processing adoption

Besides presenting multi-antenna signal processing basics, the author attempts to explain how smart antennas work and what applications benefit from this technology. And how much?

RFICs
Implementing low power GPS in mobile consumer devices

With rapid proliferation of global positioning system (GPS) technology in multiple applications, cellular handset and mobile consumer electronics device makers are seeking single chip solutions to cut development time and expedite product introduction. This article presents a highly integrated low power turnkey GPS solution that will enable manufacturers to embed best-in-class GPS functionality into their devices while reducing overall bill of material.
