Dear Electronics Marketer,
Trade shows are experiencing a resurgence as the need for face-to-face contact is becoming more and more apparent. The Microwave Theory and Techniques Society premier event - the International Microwave Symposium for 2006, will be held in San Francisco on June 11-16. May is RF Design's official MTT-S show issue, including a special preview feature examining the products that exhibitors will be unveiling.
Design engineers will travel to San Francisco from all over the world, looking to RF Design and the show for the latest in microwave and RF technology. Advertisers in this issue can be assured their message will be seen by 40,000 loyal readers and show attendees. The May Issue will be distributed in a handy carryall bag and will feature bonus distribution at our booth and in publication bins on the show floor. Ten sponsors will have the chance to drop a piece of literature or CD in the bag, and thus distribute their information to thousands of attendees!
We are also sending out a Pre-Show Newsletter with a sneak preview of some of the exciting new products that will be unveiled at the show. We are only accepting ten sponsors on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsorships begin at just $500. With all that is at stake at this show and for all the money you are investing, this is a very inexpensive way to be sure that the attendees stop by your booth first!!
The May issue will also include our magnastripped supplement, Emerging Wireless Technology edited by Cheryl Ajluni. New and emerging RF and wireless standards and technology will one day be used in everything from high-speed Internet access and smart homes, to biometric-based wireless networks. These standards are literally changing the technological landscape in which today's microwave and RF engineers work to design, test and verify next-generation systems and subsystems. In the process, they are redefining the world in which we live.
In addition to bonus distribution at MTT-S, the May issue of Emerging Wireless Technology will focus on the evolving wireless broadband technology known as WiMAX. It will address one of the areas of interest on every design engineer's mind:
- How can WiMAX-based SoC be configured to support FDD or TTD mode in the design of a multi-sector base station?
- Will WiMAX 802.16e OFDM create a new fixed-to-basic mobility market?
Your presence in this issue of Emerging WirelessTechnology will quickly establish your company as the leading supplier of compliant solutions for wireless applications. I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!
Best regards,

Test & Measurement
Challenges and importance of testing mesh networks prior to deployment
Despite the rapid growth of wireless mesh networking technology as the primary infrastructure for several broadband services, including wide area voice and data transmission, the industry lacks an established process for testing wireless mesh networks. And, without thorough testing, mesh networks cannot be deployed on a large scale. Consequently, pre-deployment testing that automates the performance testing of wireless mesh networks in a controlled laboratory environment is required to establish its credibility for mission-critical metro-area network applications. In this article, Fanny Mlinarsky, Founder & CTO, Azimuth Systems will discuss the challenges of testing mesh networks and why it is important to test pre-deployment.

Addressing requirements for flexible wafer probing solutions in 150 mm space
With the increasing diversity of semiconductor and bio-structure applications being implemented using 150 mm wafers, Diana laboy-Rush and Terry Burcham, Cascade Microtech explore the challenge of deploying cost-effective probing solutions has become a key issue. Precision measurement capabilities remain a fundamental requirement that, in the 150mm space, must be combined with configurability and adaptability of the probing platform in order to cost-effectively accommodate the demands of a variety of application-specific technologies and processes.
This article will provide an overview of the application and technology trends driving diversity in the 150 mm wafer segment and the limitations of current generation wafer probing technologies. It will focus on how new-generation, modular measurement platforms provide the adaptability for quickly changing between different probing technologies while optimizing the probes for specific requirements. An application example will be used to illustrate how this configurability can be used to optimize overall measurement capabilities.

Are IQ modulators the answer for reconfigurable radio transmitters?
The popularity of reconfigurable radios is increasing as equipment manufacturers strive to design platforms which cover multiple frequencies and radio standards. Because of their simplicity and lack of filtering, Direct Conversion signal chains are becoming a popular architectural choice in many radios. IQ Modulators and Demodulators are the key components in direct conversion transmitters and receivers. This article will focus on using IQ Modulators in re-configurable radio transmitters.

PA design for open loop EDGE large signal polar modulation systems
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) has gained strong popularity due to the increased data rates and capacity that this modulation scheme allows the network providers. Cellular handset manufacturers are launching larger numbers of EDGE capable phones every year. Most systems offered today are GSM and EDGE capable and will continue to be in the future. Jackie Johnson, Apoplications Engineer, RF Micro Devices describes how many companies in the semiconductor sector have introduced EDGE systems to provide designers a very small, cost effective solution. In this article, the authtor will discuss one type of architecture known as Open Loop Large Signal Polar Modulation and describe how the power amplifier (PA) is an important element in this system. And identify few considerations that a PA designer must consider when developing a PA for this type of a system.

Defining test system in parallel with design efforts
Increasing demands for higher performance, lower cost, and faster time to market leaves no reaoom for design failure. This article examines how model-based design helps start an executable specification, define test systems and test vectors in parallel with design and development activities. The article outlines automatic test code generationa with model-based approachs specific to control circuitry for the defense and aerospace industries.
