Sony Ericsson has published the software development kit (SDK) for its Xperia X1 phone, enabling developers to create their own mobile content applications ranging from music and video to gaming and social networking. The Xperia X1 is known for its nine interactive panels, which sit on the phone’s touchscreen interface.

Free of charge, developers can use the SDK to create their own multimedia panels that, in turn, Xperia users can customize. For example, a single touch of a panel can provide access to a favorite search engine, video clip, calendar page, or other application. The phone’s 3-in. screen, full QWERTY keyboard, and Windows Mobile 6.1 platform support additional functionality.

The kit includes an X1 emulator so designers can run, test, and debug panels locally on their computer without needing phone hardware. It also features a Microsoft Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE) and templates, as well as documents and sample code for the quick development, testing, debugging, and deployment of these panels.
