First Bluetooth WCDMA (UMTS) and GSM Voice Calls
Nov 1, 2002 12:00 PM

Qualcomm Inc. announced the successful completion of the world's first Bluetooth-to-WCDMA (UMTS) voice calls. Bluetooth technology is a short-range wireless radio solution that eliminates the need for wired connections between digital devices.

The WCDMA voice calls were made under laboratory conditions using commercially available Bluetooth headsets interfacing with QUALCOMM's mobile station modem chip on a Subscriber Unit Reference Development System (SURF) platform. Voice calls were both originated from and terminated at the Bluetooth headset.

Bluetooth-to-GSM voice calls also were demonstrated using the same MSM6200 chipset and SURF platform.
