Laird Technologies has announced two acquisitions. To add actuation products to its offerings, the company has acquired M2sys Co. Ltd. for $33.1 million. Laird also purchased Cushcraft Corporation for $89.75 million to broaden its antenna portfolio.

Based in Bucheon, South Korea, M2sys designs and manufactures custom products based on proprietary and patented technology including pivot, slide and rotary-action assemblies that enable mechanical actuation of leading-edge handheld devices while maintaining electrical integrity and performance. The company employs 80 people.

“As advanced functions are designed into ever-smaller handheld devices, the ability to fold, pivot or slide the devices to expose screens and keypads has become important and will be even more important in the future,” said Martin L. Rapp, CEO of Laird Technologies.

Likewise, Manchester, NH-based Cushcraft has design and manufacturing centers located in New Hampshire, California and Utah. The company designs high-performance antennas for infrastructure applications and uses artificial intelligence and supercomputers to simultaneously optimize antenna size, shape, beam shape, frequency response and many other factors to meet stringent customer requirements.

“Cushcraft's position in key infrastructure markets complements Laird Technologies' strong position in antenna solutions for portable and mobile applications,” noted Rapp. “The combination of the two companies positions Laird Technologies to grow the combined business in emerging markets of RFID and WiMAX.”
