High-frequency capacitor

Murata Electronics North America has announced its NFM18PS 0603 size surface-mount three-terminal capacitor series. This new capacitor has a modified electrode structure that reduces equivalent series inductance (ESL), which improves high-frequency filtering performance by providing 50 dB to 70 dB insertion loss in the 100 MHz to 1 GHz range. The capacitor is suitable for use in digital electronic equipment such as DVDs, mobile phones and digital televisions.

The main circuit application of the NFM18PS is decoupling on the power line of high-speed integrated circuits (ICs). Due to the increasing demand for faster processing speeds, ICs are required to operate at higher frequencies. These elevated operating frequencies provoke EMI issues in the higher frequency ranges. Murata's NFM18PS is ideal for these applications where standard capacitors are not suitable.

The NFM18PS series does not contain lead. Murata introduced this series in July. Samples are available at $0.11 per unit. The current lead-time is six to eight weeks.

RF coaxial line

Sabritec has introduced its RF coaxial MDCX line for test and measurement, burn-in and high power applications. The new line of hybrid connectors features MDCX contacts, which are 30% smaller than SCX contacts. Power and signal contacts can also be included.

Sabritec's MDCX multipin connectors feature a low VSWR of 1.25:1 up to 20 GHz (maximum mated pair). Each MDCX contact has a maximum overall diameter of 0.125 inch (3.175 mm) fitted into low profile metal housing. Insert arrangements are available in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-way coax assemblies with mixed signal and power contacts available in hybrid layouts. Signal contacts are available as MIL-C-39029 and Hyperboloid signal contacts.

Hyperboloid signal contacts use the patented Hypertac Contact design, which outperforms other interconnect options in terms of performance reliability, number of mating cycles, contact forces, contact resistance, and value, according to Sabritec. Hypertac contacts feature a hyperboloid-shaped basket of individual spring wires that provide up to 100,000 mating cycles, nearly half the resistance of conventional contact designs, immunity to shock and vibration, low insertion/extraction forces, and 360° wiping action.

Surface-mount RF capacitor

Vishay Intertechnology has released a silicon-based surface-mount RF capacitor available in the 0603 case size. Based on a proprietary semiconductor process developed by Vishay, the new capacitor's construction reduces parasitic inductance while bringing self-resonant frequency (SRF) values to frequencies two to three times higher than conventional RF capacitors, claims the company.

The HPC0603A features SRF values as high as 13 GHz over a broad capacitance range from 3.3 pF to 560 pF. Parasitic inductance is a low 0.046 nH. HPC0603A devices that offer E24 values are scheduled for release in the near future.

Vishay's new capacitor features high Q factors up to 4157, tolerances of ±1% or 0.05 pF, and low ESR values. The HPC0603A measures 0.063 inch × 0.031 inch [1.60 mm × 0.80 mm] with a 0.022-n. [0.56-mm] height profile. Voltage options of 6 V, 10 V, 16 V and 25 V are available.

Chip inductors

TAIYO YUDEN Inc. has announced the NR series of low-profile wound-chip inductors. The NR series is designed specifically for use in dc-dc converter choke-coil applications. The three part numbers in the NR series provide a uniform 4 mm × 4 mm footprint and are available in 1.0 mm (Model number NR 4010), 1.2 mm (NR4012) or 1.8 mm (NR4018) device heights.

The NR series wound-chip inductors occupy a footprint of 16 square mm. To increase rated current, the company developed a ferrite-resin compound that when applied to the exterior of the wound chip inductor allows more space for the internal conductor, minimizes heat generation and improves dc inductance characteristics.

Sichrome thin film resistor

PolarFab has introduced a new SiChrome (SiCr) thin-film resistor that features low parasitics and a 500-Ohm sheet resistance to help reduce die size. The resistor is available on PolarFab's RFBC and ABC3 0.8-micron c-BiCMOS processes, used for manufacturing integrated circuits for high-performance amplifier, line driver, consumer electronics, and power management applications. The new laser trimmable resistor makes the processes suitable for precision analog applications as well.

The laser trimmability provides resistor matching and contributes to a smaller die size and tighter tolerances for repeatable, consistent performance characteristics to reduce the tendency to over-design for process variation. In addition to the reduced die size of circuits fabricated using PolarFab's RFBC and ABC3 processes, the SiCr resistor provides a zero temperature coefficient (TCR).

Pricing and delivery is dependent on customer requirements.

Coaxial low-pass filters

Using a 7-section low-pass filter design, the VLF series filters cover dc to 6700 MHz band. They provide excellent passband matching (typical VSWR is 1.2), an ultrawide stopband and a sharp transition band. In essence, the VLF series low-pass filters are designed to deliver excellent harmonic rejection in the dc to 6700 MHz band. Built with solid stainless steel unibody construction and coated with a durable gold finish, these units feature SMA-type connectors, can handle high power (up to 7 Watts at input) and are temperature stable from -55 °C to +100 °C. These low-cost filters are ideal for eliminating the harmonics produced by transmitters, amplifiers and non-linear passives. Typical applications include transmitter/receiver filtering, repeaters, and lab test setups. In stock, prices start from $19.95 each in quantities of 1-9.

EMI filter

California Micro Devices has announced the availability of the Praetorian advanced ASIP (application specific integrated passive) process that enables the integration of spiral inductors with resistors, capacitors and ESD protection diodes in a single chip design. ASIP products using the Praetorian process will address the electromagnetic (EMI) filter and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection requirements of high-speed data buses.

The devices will offer EMI filter performance characteristics, including minimized insertion loss, higher cutoff frequencies, faster roll-off and maximized attenuation at high frequencies, as well as effective ESD protection.

California Micro Devices filters using the Praetorian process-enabling integrated inductors will deliver these results while providing ESD protection.
