Matrics announces family of UHF ID products
Matrics has introduced a passive UHF (902 to 928 MHz) product family. Designed to create a “people-free” wireless environment for tracking products and assets. A 1D medium strip version that is approximately 6" long by ¾" wide, a 2D square version that is approximately 4" × 4", and a 2D square version that is approximately 2" × 2" and can be laminated into plastic cards. The 2D inlay is unique to the industry because the IC has two ports that allow for perpendicular antenna construction that is this design that creates an orientation-insensitive smart label. With an approach that removes the circuit complexity from the IC, the tags are simple and inexpensive to produce. The lean chip design requires very low power and consequently produces powerful read ranges. Each chip is secure and tamperproof, because the unique ID is programmed very early in the manufacturing process. Inlays can be incorporated into standard laminated paper or plastic to create inexpensive stick-on labels. The smart labels can be attached to or embedded in products, boxes, pallets, trays and/or totes to produce a “people-free,” wireless system that uniquely identifies and tracks items as they travel through the supply chain. Since data is collected automatically from the labels, no human error is introduced, thus maintaining the integrity of the database. Specifications at a glance:

The Aero+ transceiver brings a new level of integration to multi-band GSM digital cellular handsets and GPRS voice and data terminals. With an integrated digitally controlled crystal oscillator (DCXO), the Aero+ transceiver eliminates the need for an expensive voltage controlled temperature compensated crystal oscillator (VC-TCXO), which saves handset manufacturers more than 15% in bill of material (BOM) costs over existing solutions. Additionally, the transceiver integrates the IF SAW filter, external low noise amplifiers (LNAs), transmit and RF voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) modules and more than 60 other discrete components. Its software programmable universal baseband interface allowing handset designers to implement the Aero+ with any baseband subsystem. It is also fully compliant with GPRS cClass 12 requirements providing high-speed data communications to the mobile computing environment. The Aero+ transceiver includes: the 32-lead micro-leadframe package (MLP) Si4200 transceiver; 20-lead MLP Si4201 baseband interface; and 32-lead MLP Si4134T RF synthesizer. New single-chip conversion transceiver slashes costs
Skyworks has introduced a new single-chip direct conversion transceiver that simplifies the design of multi-band GSM handsets. The company has integrated the crystal oscillator circuitry and power amplifier controller functionality into a smaller 8mm × 8mm package, further reducing the bill of materials cost by $1 to $2 per phone. The CX74063 transceiver supports general packet radio service (GPRS) and enhanced data rates for global evolution (EDGE) standards, and provides a roadmap to dual-mode, wide-band code division multiple access (W-CDMA)/GSM universal mobile telecommunications (UMTS) handsets. The system's architecture reduces the number of external components required to build a mobile handset by more than one-third, reducing the size, cost and power requirements of next-generation GSM handsets. The device integrates all of the circuitry associated with generating a 13 MHz or 26 MHz system reference frequency, with the exception of the crystal. The transceiver consists of integrated quad-band low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), a quadrature demodulator, baseband filters and a direct current (DC) offset correction sequencer. It uses a low-frequency, low-pass filter to perform all of the required tasks associated with rejecting in-band blocking signals and adjacent alternate channels. This approach contrasts with superheterodyne architectures that require external surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters for each of the bands supported in a multi-band handset as well as a VHF voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). Key transceiver features include a translational loop structure on the transmitter side, consisting of an in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) modulator, offset mixer, phase detector and internal quad-band transmit VCOs without an external tank. The transmitter offers exceptionally high performance, thus also reducing the number of external components. The local oscillator structure is formed around a fractional-N phase lock loop (PLL) with all components integrated with the exception of the external passive loop filter. Agile channel switching enables support of GPRS multi-slot operation, and key performance parameters are optimized through the use of Skyworks' internally developed, low-cost RF packaging technology. The transceiver is packaged in a 8 mm × 8mm 56-pin RF land grid array (RFLGA) and is priced at $5.50 in quantities of 10,000. Specifications at a glance:
