Single-chip GPS module
Nov 1, 2001 12:00 PM

Valence Semiconductor debuts the VS7001 integrated circuit for GPS applications. The module represents an advanced, fully integrated, pure CMOS receiver on a chip and provides the industry a path to a single-chip GPS system. The VS7001 provides GPS designers with a chip including functions such as low power consumption, small die size, low external component count, and a high level of design integration. The module offers one of the most advanced GPS products currently on the market. The chip is designed in pure, deep sub-micron CMOS that provides robust performance and integration with multiple baseband technologies. Because power consumption is only 27 mW, the chip receiver can be integrated in a number of battery-operated devices that will offer solutions to new GPS and mobile connectivity markets. In the future, GPS chip solutions will be available in cell phones to comply to the new FCC Enhanced 911 standard (E911), in new vehicles to provide navigation capabilities (traveler information) and in personal digital assistants equipped with real-time maps. The chip supports flexible frequency ranges and interfaces. Additionally, The GPS' design technology has eliminated the need for expensive and bulky surface acoustical wave IF filters, or multiple passive components that are used to attenuate image signal and noise in current products. By incorporating the industry's smallest total footprint and low power consumption, Valence's VS7001 is targeted at GPS markets worldwide, including in-vehicle navigation, consumer communications and vehicle/freight tracking. Other GPS markets that offer opportunity for small footprint, integrated GPS receivers include surveying & mapping, marine, aviation, agriculture and military.
