News Worthy Mar 1, 2007 12:00 PM Wavesat
Wavesat (www.wavesat.com) recently participated with its UMobile products in the WiMAX Forum's second public Mobile PlugFest. Wavesat's 802.16e mobile product strategy is centered on its UMobile family of WiMAX chipsets. These products support all features of Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 profiles in a cost effective, flexible and highly programmable architecture. Alvarion and Accton Technology
Alvarion (www.alvarion.com) and Accton Technology Corporation (www.accton.com) have formed Accton Wireless Broadband (www.awbnetworks.com). This new company, based in Taiwan, will develop mass-market mobile WiMAX consumer electronic devices that complement Alvarion's WiMAX offerings. It will also facilitate the transition of WiMAX and personal broadband services to worldwide availability. NDS and MobiTV
NDS (www.nds.com) has partnered with MobiTV (www.mobitv.com) to demonstrate the first-ever secure delivery of Mobile WiMAX TV to ultramobile PCs at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show. The integration of NDS VideoGuard with the MobiTV service enables mobile WiMAX operators to offer premium mobile television over a two-way IEEE 802.16e network while maintaining content rights and protecting service revenues. Aircel Business Solutions
Aircel Business Solutions, a subsidiary of leading Indian cellular service provider Aircel (www.aircel.com), is expanding its network and planning to use Alvarion's BreezeMAX 3300 to deploy WiMAX networks across 50 cities in northern and eastern India. Aircel has deployments in eight cities. BreezeMAX will be used to overlay and expand Aircel's broadband and cellular network infrastructure to offer affordable broadband data services to small and medium enterprise (SME) customers. ADAPTIX and Maxim Integrated Products
ADAPTIX (www.adaptix.com) will use WiMAX RF transceivers from Maxim Integrated Products (www.maxim-ic.com) to power the RF capabilities of its ADAPTIX SX-series mobile WiMAX terminals. These terminals are designed to support mass-market deployment of mobile WiMAX by carriers and operators. With the new Maxim RF chipset, the ADAPTIX SX-series mobile WiMAX terminals will offer carriers a high-performance, cost-effective means of deploying mobile WiMAX. Sequans Communications and TurboConcepts
Sequans Communications (www.sequans.com) is using TurboConcept's (www.turboconcept.com) Convolutional Turbo Decoder technology, TC1000WiMAX, in its fixed and mobile WiMAX semiconductor solutions based on the IEEE 802.16 standards. The use of turbo codes allows significant link budget gain over legacy forward error correction codes. Sequans' products exploit the full benefits of TurboConcept's advanced decoder solution. TenXC and Coherent Designs
TenXc Wireless (www.tenxc.com) and Coherent Designs (www.coherent.com.au/) have established a development center in Islamabad, Pakistan. The center expands TenXc's research and development capabilities and will play an integral role in the development of fourth-generation (4G) access systems such as mobile WiMAX and 3GPP LTE with combined MIMO/AAS technology. Its engineering team will collaborate with TenXc's research and development team in Canada on design and development of enhanced wireless access subsystems. Motorola and Texas Instruments
Motorola (www.motorola.com) and Texas Instruments (www.ti.com) are expanding their strategic relationship to include 3G, WiMAX and OMAP technologies in the design and development of experience-optimized mobile devices. As part of the expansion, TI is supporting Motorola's mobile WiMAX initiative, including development of a customized Motorola WiMAX solution, and providing digital design elements, high-performance analog components, RF solutions, and manufacturing process and fabrication expertise. The solution will focus on core 802.16e mobile WiMAX functionality supporting voice, video and data for low-power mobile applications. It will be manufactured in 65 nm and is expected to be ready to support production of new mobile devices that Motorola plans to launch during 2008. WiMAX Forum
The WiMAX Forum (www.wimaxforum.org) brought 35 companies from the mobile WiMAX equipment and test equipment communities together for the second public mobile WiMAX Forum PlugFest, an interoperability showcase hosted by AT4 wireless Labs in Malaga, Spain. The event attracted the largest number of participants to date, including WiMAX system and chipset supplier companies. Its turnout underscored the interest and strong momentum leading up to mobile WiMAX Forum Certification in mid-2007 and market availability of WiMAX Forum Certified mobile products in late 2007. Initial systems to achieve WiMAX Forum Certification will be based on the 2.3 GHz profile.
