Mobile video antenna portfolio now includes terrestrial services

Antenna developer and manufacturer SkyCross has announced the expansion of its popular mobile video antenna family. A major worldwide supplier of mobile video antennas for the satellite – digital multimedia broadcasting (S-DMB) service in South Korea, it is now applying its technology knowledge and extensive field experience to provide antennas for terrestrial services, including T-DMB and digital video broadcasting – handheld (DVB-H). This announcement comes on the heels of a recent mobile video collaboration with Intel to further develop mobile video applications together with selected voice and data initiatives. This announcement was made at this week’s Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco, Calif.

The expansion of the SkyCross mobile video antenna product family to terrestrial networks supports the expanding rollout in South Korea, the introduction of T-DMB and DVB-H in China, as well as DVB-H trials in Europe and in other parts of the world. SkyCross already provides internal antennas that support terrestrial back-up links for satellite video. This offering is now being extended to include external, retractable, detachable, as well as internal, terrestrial antenna designs.

The mobile video terrestrial frequency bands operate as low as 180 MHz on some networks. This is considerably lower than voice standards, which start at the 850 MHz band. The low frequency specifications for terrestrial mobile video physically demand a larger antenna. SkyCross is able to engineer these antennas smaller than the competition with equivalent performance and has developed fully embedded solutions even at the lowest frequency bands, according to SkyCross.
