Finnish Air Force selects the EADS CASA C-295 aircraft
May 10, 2006 12:17 PM

The Finnish Air Force has selected the EADS CASA C-295 as a tactical transport aircraft. The contract covers the acquisition of two aircraft and five options. These C-295 will replace Fokker 27s, which are currently in service and are approaching the end of their operational life.

This decision follows a rigorous year and one-half selection process that included two in-flight evaluations—in cold weather in the Finnish Arctic area, as well as in hot weather summer conditions in the south of Spain THE EADS CASA C-295 is a twin-engine, multipurpose military transport powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines. The aircraft has a length of 80 feet., a height of 28 feet., and its wingspan is 82 feet.

The C-295 is capable of transporting up to 73 troops or 48 fully equipped paratroopers—or 27 stretchers with four medical attendants. Or when employed to transport freight it can carry up to five 7.2 feet x 8.8 feet pallets, three light vehicles, or three fighter engines such as the EJ200. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. The EADS Group includes the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the helicopter supplier Eurocopter, and the joint venture MBDA, a leader in missile systems. EADS is a major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, is the prime contractor for the Ariane launcher, and is developing the A400M military transport aircraft. EADS is also the largest industrial partner in the Galileo European satellite navigation system program.
