Nov 23, 2005 12:13 PM

On Nov. 17, Smiths Aerospace delivered armor components for the 13,500th Humvee as part of the U.S. Army's Humvee up-armoring program. These components are manufactured at the Smiths Aerospace Component facility in Terre Haute, Ind. and are then supplied as up-armoring kits to Centigon, the prime supplier to the U.S Army.

The U.S. Army began the Up-armored High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheel Vehicle program in 1994. By 2003, approximately 3,500 vehicles had been up-armored and 7,850 were complete by the end of 2004. It is projected that by the year 2009, a minimum of 20,000 Humvees will be equipped with the up-armor. Smiths Aerospace Humvee armor components include: the gun turret support, the kick panel liners, the cowl liners and the left-front support frame.

Potential sales over the life of the program are expected to exceed $75 million. Smiths specializes in manufacturing processes for the aerospace industry.
