Dual sensor camera combines visible and thermal imaging for improved security Apr 11, 2006 4:37 PM By Steve Grossman, Editor
The Infrared Products Division of L-3 Communications has unveiled a dual-sensor camera, its Thermal-Eye 2400xp, which unites visible and thermal imaging in a single unit. It thereby brings a number of features together that will enable security installations to overcome weather, darkness, as well as other issues that are problematic in detection--such as false alarms. "The combination of the thermal, the visible and the software package that comprises the Thermal Eye 2400xp combines nicely to help security professionals to fulfill their duties more effectively," according to Mike Studer, vice president of marketing for L-3 communications. Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) thermal-imaging technology is used that provides a clear 320-pixel by 240-pixel image while the high-resolution, fully automatic, charge-coupled device (CCD) visible camera is equipped with a 25x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom. Also, the dynamic range of (BST) makes it immune to the sun, which can be somewhat blinding in other technologies, said Studer. Designed for military, law enforcement and industrial security applications, the camera employs L-3's Gold-Standard thermal-imaging technology to detect intruders and protect assets. The 2400xp can also be equipped with optional graphical user interface (GUI) software that defines a region of interest automatically to detect motion and provide intruder alarms. The unit is available in either NTSC or PAL video-output formats so that it is well suited for full-motion and real-time day/night 24/7 video surveillance. Located in Dallas, TX, L-3 Communications Infrared Products is a producer of uncooled thermal imaging products for the public safety, fire and rescue, and security markets.
