New step-down converter uses just 2.0 mm × 2.1 mm of circuit-board real estate

Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc.’s new AAT1149 is a high-performance, 400-mA step-down converter. Developed with space-constrained portable applications in mind, this fast transient converter enables the use of the industry's latest 0603 footprint and 1-mm high inductors for the smallest possible total solution size.

"Developers of mobile handsets and modules for new smart phone applications, such as Digital Media Broadcast and Digital Video Broadcast, strive to drive down system thickness and footprint," said Bill Weiss, product line director. "By enabling the use of a 0603 footprint, 1-mm high inductors and because it is housed in a small, 2.0-mm × 2.1-mm SC70JW package, the AAT1149 delivers the power these applications need."

The AAT1149 delivers 400 mA of load current over an input range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V. Its output voltage is programmable via external feedback resistors from 1 V to VIN. Overall efficiency is 98%, and no load quiescent current is 45 µA The device runs at a 3-MHz switching frequency enabling the use of extremely small external components, while keeping switching losses low.

To prevent damage during overload conditions, the AAT1149 provides current limit protection. An overtemperature protection circuit disables switching if internal dissipation becomes excessive. An integrated 70-µs soft-start feature limits current surge and eliminates output voltage overshoot at start up.

Specified over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range, the AAT1149 is available in a Pb-free, 8-pin SC70JW package. The price of the AAT1149 is $0.87 in 1000-piece quantities.
