A next-generation explosives screening device is under development Apr 11, 2006 4:42 PM
Detex Security Systems, a company that specializes in developing state-of-the-art security solutions, has begun the re-engineering and development of the second generation of its Milliscope technology. The company plans to develop and convert the Milliscope prototype into a fully functioning explosives screening device to be manufactured and distributed globally. The prototype is expected to be demonstrated by the company in October. It will have the ability to detect contraband and plastic explosives using dual sensors for increased sensitivity that will greatly reduce false alarms and ensure extreme accuracy. Upon completion, the Milliscope will have the capacity to serve as a stand-alone screening solution as well as a supplemental security device to reinforce other security measures. The first-generation prototype demonstrated that the Milliscope technology can detect dangerous plastic and other types of explosives. With the second-generation prototype, the company will incorporate specific modifications and enhancements with the objective of developing a device that can be mass-produced and used with only limited training. The instrument employs millimeter-wavelength technology to rapidly and accurately detect plastic explosives such as Semtex and C-4, conventional explosives such as TNT, and other contraband such as metal and non-metal weapons and illegal drugs. Detex Security plans to market and distribute this portable device as a detecting solution in public and private facilities such as airports, government buildings, schools, corporate offices and border checkpoints.
