Spotlight on Automotive Wireless Connectivity

Pulse has introduced its PG0702NL series of flat-coil surface-mount (SMT) power inductors. These inductors have a low DCR of 0.89 to 5.9 milliOhms and a tight tolerance of ±6% for higher efficiency. Inductance values range from 0.40 to 3.0 microhenries with a peak saturation of 15 to 45 amperes. Operating frequency is 100 kHz to 1 MHz at an operating temperature of -40 to +130 degrees Celsius with no thermal derating. These inductors are used to store energy and serve as filters in voltage regulator modules VRMs used in DC/DC applications, point-of-load converters and other high-density, high-power, high-ambient temperature applications.

Pulse's PG0702NL series uses a ferrite core material that has one-tenth the core loss of iron powder or iron alloy core materials. The lower core loss of the ferrite material is optimized at frequencies above 500 kHz. The decrease in core loss increases system efficiency by five to 10 percent. Because the ferrite material is immune to thermal aging, these inductors are reliable at higher operating temperatures.

The PG0702NL series has a self-leaded, round, wire coil that lowers the overall cost of the finished product, and provides a tight tolerance of the DC resistance at ±6%. The tight DCR tolerance enhances current sensing control, regulation and transient response.

Pulse's PG0702NL inductors have an industry-standard 4040 footprint of 10.8 x 9.5 x 8 millimeters and incorporate a three-pin design for improved mechanical stability. The unconnected third pin at the back of the inductor distributes the component's weight and balance among the three terminals in the event of mechanical vibration.

Pulse's PG0702NL series is RoHS compliant and meets standard EIA481 requirements. Prices start at $0.25 in quantities of 500,000 pieces or more; lead time is four to six weeks.
