New large-cell battery technology raises reliability, lowers cost
May 23, 2007 2:06 PM  By Steve Grossman, Editor

Lithium Technology Corporation has announced a new product line of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells, said to be the largest cells of their kind in the world.

What is distinctive about these batteries is that they are composed of large cells, so the total number required to provide 7 kWh (kilowatt hours) of power is reduced from 100s and 1000s — to just 63. According to Dr. Klaus Brandt, CEO of LTC, this enhances reliability. There are both far fewer cells and far fewer connections because there are far fewer components. A smaller number of connections and fewer cells to monitor is also less costly.

Incidentally, a plug-in, hybrid vehicle equipped with a 7 kWh storage battery that is recharged daily, would be capable of 20 to 30 miles – with no gasoline consumption at all.

Brandt adds: "The technology we can offer the automotive industry today is unmatched by any other battery power solution on the market. Others have been estimating up to a year to deliver the technology we are able to make available today. We have proven the superiority of our technology in the past, and with the iron phosphate product we have raised the bar even further."

LTC, a global provider of large lithium-ion rechargeable power solutions has focused solely on the development and production of large-format, lithium-ion batteries for more than twenty years. In the past their main business has been the defense industry – powering unmanned vehicles and robots.
LTC headquarters are located in Plymouth Meeting, PA and R&D in Nordhausen, Germany.
