U.S. Army places a $54 million follow-on order for medium tactical vehicles
May 28, 2008 2:19 PM

The U.S. Army has awarded a $54 million contract to BAE Systems for the manufacture of approximately 370 Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV). The contract is a modification to the current FMTV production contract, now totaling $3.6 billion dollars and calls for the production of FMTVs in various configurations — including dump trucks, cargo trucks, wreckers, and trailers. Approximately 100 of the FMTVs will be configured to meet the U.S. Army's long term armor strategy initiative to equip all tactical vehicles with the ability to be armored when necessary.

More than 48,000 FMTV trucks and trailers are in service with the U.S. Army. The commonality of parts among the FMTV includes shared engines, transmissions, power trains, tires and cabs. This commonality significantly reduces the logistics burden, and the operating and the support costs for the U.S. Army.

Production of the FMTV trucks will be performed in Sealy, Texas, and is expected to be completed this year. BAE Systems employs more than 2,400 people in Sealy, Texas and has 900,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space on approximately 200 acres. The company is the exclusive manufacturer of FMTVs and the producer of the Caiman MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle).
