Wideband VCO in 4 mm square package covers 8 GHz to 12.5 GHz
Nov 23, 2005 12:36 PM

Hittite Microwave Corporation has introduced a wideband MMIC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), the HMC588LC4B that combines the attributes of ultrasmall size, low phase noise, low power consumption and wide tuning range. It is well suited for military communications, electronic warfare (EW) and electronic countermeasures (ECM) applications in the frequency domain of 8.0 GHz to 12.5 GHz.

This VCO, comprising a resonator, a negative resistance device and a varactor diode, covers an output tuning range from 8.0 GHz to 12.5 GHz, delivering up to +5 dBm of output power while exhibiting a SSB phase noise of -93 dBc/Hz, maximum, at an offset of 100 kHz. An analog tuning voltage from 0 V to +15 V is applied to the Vtune port of the VCO that can accommodate a very fast sweep rate over a bandwidth of 65 MHz. The HMC588LC4B operates from a single +5 V supply at 55 mA. It is housed in an RoHS-compliant 4 mm x 4 mm SMT package that requires up to 85% less PC board area than a hybrid-based VCO.
