X-ray technology to screen carry-on luggage at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport
May 10, 2006 11:58 AM

Smiths Detection, a provider of x-ray and trace detection systems, has signed a multimillion-dollar contract to supply x-ray systems to screen carry-on luggage at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport. The company will supply 70 of its Hi-Scan 6040i systems. Delivery is to be completed by May 2007.

The 6040i has a tunnel opening that is 24 inches wide by 16 inches high so it is well suited for scanning cabin baggage. The overall dimensions of the system are 79 inches long by 34 inches wide by 51 inches high and it weighs 882 pounds. The decision to select the HI-SCAN 6040i, in preference to other x-ray systems, followed an evaluation by the Shanghai Pudong International Airport officials that placed the greatest emphasis on quality and value in their decision.

"This contract with Shanghai Pudong International Airport is yet another example of Smiths Detection's focus on delivering high-quality, checkpoint x-ray technology to the China transportation market," said Mal Maginnis, president of Smiths Detection Asia Pacific.

One of four operating divisions of Smiths Group, Smiths Detection offers technologically advanced security solutions to detect and identify explosives, chemical and biological agents, weapons and contraband. They employ trace detection technology, together with Smiths Heimann x-ray imaging, to provide screening solutions for customers in civil and military markets worldwide. Smiths Detection Asia Pacific operates from Singapore, with regional offices in Beijing and five other countries.
