Puerto Rico electric power authority gets wireless networking capability
Jun 17, 2004 4:19 PM

Rochester, N.Y.-based industrial wireless networking provider Microwave Data Systems (MDS) and full-service partner Intracom Inc., based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, have announced that Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) has selected the MDS iNET 900 for communications in its automated dam data acquisition and alert reporting systems (ADDAARS). Under this scheme, MDS iNET radios will be networked as part of an island-wide effort to provide Ethernet and remote data acquisition to water reservoirs and regional offices around the island. ADDAARS software platform together with MDS iNET high-speed data transfer will provide PREPA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) real-time measurements of rainfall and reservoir water levels year around.

The MDS iNET will allow PREPA and the USGS to communicate data and control information from remote units to an existing Ethernet and fiber network, which is part of the Network and Information Technology Monitoring Center in San Juan. The iNET is a long-range, high-speed, secure, wireless IP/Ethernet and Serial solution. It integrates the functionality of multiple devices into one solution and allows multiple users to run multiple applications and protocols. This enables customers to bring mission-critical, revenue-generating data from fixed assets, such as utility meters, over Ethernet and/or Serial gateway onto corporate networks.

"Because the MDS iNET is an IP, Ethernet and Serial solution, it can easily integrate with almost any network allowing data to be brought onto an enterprise-wide Ethernet network," noted Intracom President Miguel Aponte. "We're pleased that the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority selected the MDS iNET and that our successful relationships allowed us to be involved in this project."
