Sweden Post selects wireless VPN system with secure roaming between WLAN, GPRS
Dec 1, 2005 11:58 AM

Wireless security solutions provider Columbitech recently announced that Sweden Post, the mail delivery service group of Sweden’s Posten AB, has chosen the Columbitech Wireless VPN (WVPN) and Columbitech Application SDK. Columbitech’s solutions will provide secure communications for 2500 handheld mobile computers connected to a parcel delivery system, which has been designed to streamline nationwide delivery and distribution of parcels.

The new system is scheduled to be fully operational in the summer of 2006. With the new system up and running, the postal drivers will pick up about 200,000 parcels per day, scan them with an Intermec device and then the data will be sent through a WLAN, telling the central server that the parcel is now being delivered.

Upon delivery the customer signs the receipt directly on the PDA’s display, and the central server again gets updated, this time through GPRS. This will make it possible to track the parcel in real time all the way through the delivery chain from Sweden Post’s website.

The patented security software, Columbitech Wireless VPN, provides end-to-end security with transaction recovery and session persistence as well as seamless roaming among different types of networks. Along with the SDK and VPN solutions from Columbitech, Sweden Post will also receive ongoing support and maintenance.
