Broadband technologies support nationwide hurricane relief and recovery efforts Sep 22, 2005 7:07 PM By Ashok Bindra, Editorial Director
There are many shining examples of how military and non-government organizations have come together in times of natural disasters to rescue those in distress. Now in the wake of hurricane Katrina, global satellite solutions and services provider Tachyon Networks Inc. is supporting the hurricane relief effort by donating a turnkey satellite equipment and broadband services system to the Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) arm of Joint Task Force Katrina. The point-to-multipoint system provides NPS with secure, carrier-grade broadband satellite service to facilitate communication between shore-based relief personnel and field agents throughout the Gulf region. “Our Marines and Sailors based here are working closely with Tachyon to establish two rapidly deployed mobile networks to aid victims of Katrina,” said Rear Adm. David S. Bill III (U.S.N. Ret.), executive director of the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation Inc. in Monterey, California. “This joint effort clearly demonstrates how non-governmental organizations like Tachyon can directly assist military organizations like ours to provide humanitarian relief in times of crisis.” “We are honored to be able to provide such a timely, real-world application of our proven satellite broadband capabilities to people in distress,” said Peter Carides, president and CEO of Tachyon. “This is where research and field applications come together to form the backbone of crisis communication initiatives and where the capabilities of NPS’ dedicated professionals are clearly demonstrable.” Joint Task Force Katrina is using Tachyon’s push-button, automatically deployable satellite earth station solution (known as the Auto Deploy), which is one of the company’s suite of transportable broadband access products. The Auto Deploy is capable of providing high-speed connectivity at virtually any location in a matter of minutes. Tachyon solutions also are ideally suited for business continuity applications, providing total network redundancy via satellite, thereby ensuring that natural disasters and landline outages do not hinder data communications or reduce productivity in the aftermath of such catastrophes.
