Software reduces identity theft risk in stolen cell phones Oct 12, 2006 1:28 PM By Mark Valentine, Technical Editor
Synchronica’s Mobile Manger 1.3 derives security from the fact that on average, only 30 seconds is required to notice a missing cell phone that has been stolen. This fact, along with certain standard security features found in every wireless handset, enables the software to provide a layer of security for the personal information stored on the phone. According to Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, Mobile Manager 1.3 is an aftermarket software package that works with most cell phones out of the box. The Mobile Manager software is installed on target phones over the air. This is done with a text message containing a download link. There are three basic security features provided by the client software. The features are activated by the IT department or service provider when requested by the person to whom the phone was issued (see figure). A first feature allows the phone to be locked down. Next, to increase the chances of recovering the phone (and possibly locating the confiscator), the scream feature can be used. Once activated, this feature causes the cell phone to produce an embarrassing loud tone, which cannot be stopped again. The third feature remotely wipes clean the internal memory of the phone. Activating the features in this order is considered the ideal sequence. This software presents enterprises, mobile operators and handset manufacturers with options for increased security. At least one handset OEM has considered installing this software at the factory, providing the end user with security features controlled through web-based services. Brinkschulte stated that Mobile Manager so far is the only selfcare solution for enterprises offering advances mobile device management. He added that Synchronica will work with individual OEMs to customize the software for specific handsets. |
