Aperto unveils mobile WiMAX platform Oct 1, 2006 12:00 PM
At this month's WiMAX World in Boston, Aperto Networks unveiled a refurbished platform to support a range of deployment options for network operators looking to capitalize on the IEEE 802.16-2004 fixed and IEEE 802.16e-2005 mobile WiMAX standards. Aperto's mobile WiMAX offering is based on an extension of the company's PacketMAX architecture, including the PM5000, the first base station to be certified by the WiMAX Forum. Aperto has adapted PacketMAX to accommodate the mobile WiMAX standard through 802.16e-2005-compliant radio controller modules and software-selectable subscriber units allowing spectrally efficient collocation of the equipment based on the fixed and mobile WiMAX standards. “Until recently, Network operators have been somewhat perplexed as to when and how they should deploy WiMAX networks, and in what configuration. Should they deploy fixed WiMAX or wait to implement mobile WiMAX when the equipment is available?” said Berge Ayvazian, chief strategy officer, Yankee Group. “Aperto's extended PacketMAX architecture and innovative migration path gives network operators the confidence to take advantage of the fixed WiMAX market opportunities, and the means to capitalize on the mobile WiMAX market opportunities of tomorrow, seamlessly and cost effectively, using the same platform.” The PacketMAX 5000 base station is the industry's highest density, highest capacity, and highest-performing base station. By inserting the “e” blade, operators have the flexibility to deploy fixed and mobile subscribers from a single base station or operate PacketMAX 5000 as a stand-alone fixed or stand-alone mobile base station. PacketMAX includes outdoor and indoor subscriber units and is designed for consumer, small business and large enterprise users. CPE options have been designed with dual ‘d’ and ‘e’ modes; to interoperate with ‘d’ and ‘e’ base stations; and to perform optimally in ‘d’ mode and in ‘e’ mode, according to Aperto Netwoks. “Aperto has been a solutions partner for GTS Poland for a long time and its introduction of “e” or mobile WiMAX fits into our plans,” said Pawel Kozlowski, field and access engineering director, GTS Poland. “With PacketMAX subscriber units we can run the “fixed” standard or the “mobile” standard depending on software load; and the PacketMAX 5000 base station gives us the flexibility to run both standards in the same footprint making technology migration straightforward. By executing this strategy, Aperto has proven its ability to solve operator problems.” For more information, visit www.apertonet.com.
