Development tool enables advanced mobile applications
Feb 22, 2007 5:32 PM

Ubiquity Software has launched its Session Initiation Protocol Application Server Gateway (SIP A/S Gateway) for Microsoft Connected Services Framework, a development tool designed to enable the creation, testing and trial of “mashup” applications based on the Microsoft’s Connected Services Framework and Ubiquity’s SIP A/S. “Mashups” are enhanced, blended applications formed from discrete applications.

One example of a popular mashup is called "I’m Lost" (click to see demo video of "I'm Lost"). In this application, a mobile phone can access Microsoft’s Outlook program to find the location of an appointment. The mashup combines GPS data with Microstoft Outolook and web-based mapping resources like MapPoint, then uses interactive voice recognition (IVR), text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities to direct the user to the appointment.

In conjunction with the release of this tool, Ubiquity has formed a strategic alliance with Tech Mahindra, an IT solutions provider based in India, to develop advanced applications. For example, Tech Mahindra has developed a demonstration application for the SIP A/S CSF Gateway called “Automatic Call Back”.

This application, which supports both wireless and wire line users, combines the Microsoft Connected Services Framework and Exchange products with the Ubiquity SIP A/S and the SIP A/S CSF Gateway. It automatically connects two parties by scheduling a call through the users’ calendar applications at a convenient time for both parties, and then initiates the call.

According to Ubiquity’s Gary Gray, Senior Director of Corporate Marketing, the Gateway tool is designed mainly for use by the system integrators and developers of mobile communications applications. As illustrated by the two previous examples, the tools can be used to extend the mashup capabilities of Microsoft Connected Services Framework to include real-time, carrier-class communications services, such as IVR, VoIP, IP conferencing, and other telephony-related services.
