WiMAX and LTE emerging as most likely candidates for next-gen networks Sep 23, 2008 2:36 PM Research and Markets announced the addition of the "Global - Wireless Broadband - Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN)" report to its offering. In 2008 it is becoming apparent that WiMAX and LTE are emerging as the most likely candidates for Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN). However, attitudes toward the two technologies are divided; differing at a regional level and also between the types of service providers vying for this space. At this stage, competitive positioning is often the driver behind a service provider’s choice, rather than market demand. The fact that progress in wireless broadband is occurring at such a slow pace is creating anxiety in the market, and there is an ongoing information war being waged around wireless broadband developments. While there is no doubt that wireless broadband is going to play a much larger role than anybody originally expected, there are also still some physical constraints (lack of spectrum, lack of IP-based mobile) that are hard to ignore.
