World’s first TELEC-certified worldwide wireless USB module
Oct 8, 2007 2:06 PM

Alereon has demonstrated its first worldwide Wireless USB module at CEATEC, Murata Manufacturing Co,. Ltd. which developed the module for the CEATEC demonstration. The module has passed Japanese regulatory TELEC Test Certification, allowing over-the-air operation in band group 6.

The demonstration included two Wireless USB modules communicating in band group 6 over the air. The demonstration showcased the AL5000-based Wireless USB module that meets frequency spectrum requirements worldwide, including the upper-band groups required in Japan, Korea and the European Union.

Alereon’s AL5000 chipset transmits and receives WiMedia band groups one, two, three, four, five and six which span frequencies from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz. Supporting band groups four, five and six (7.4 GHz to 10.6 GHz) enables all 17 channels, which is required to provide consumers in Japan and Korea comparable performance to applications in the rest of the world.

The AL5000 chipset supports band group six, which unlike alternative solutions that provide only band groups one and three, is the only band group to meet all worldwide regulations. Support of only band groups one and three provides Japan and Korea a single channel of communications, greatly reducing performance and range.

The AL5000 chipset is ideal for Certified Wireless USB, Bluetooth or WiMedia manufacturers that wish to address the worldwide market, with varying UWB regulations and requirements including the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, and China. A single worldwide AL5000 chipset enables research and development, certification, manufacturing logistics and inventory to be streamlined, resulting in significant cost and time-to-market savings.

Initial module samples are available to qualified alpha customers.
