Leading Swedish school increases student collaboration with Xirrus 802.11n Wi-Fi arrays Dec 9, 2008 1:01 PM
Xirrus, Inc. announced the deployment of 802.11abg+n Wi-Fi arrays at Minervagymnasium, a 10-12 grade high school located on the campus of Umea University in Umea, Sweden. Minervagymnasium upgraded from Apple Airport Extremes to Xirrus 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays to deliver 14x more Wi-Fi bandwidth and throughput for students and faculty throughout their state-of-the-art facility. The highly respected and award-winning Minervagymnasium was established a few years ago to give students a desire for lifelong learning by providing them with a strong foundation in technology and global issues. Each student and teacher is issued an Apple Macbook computer to be used for all schoolwork and communications while attending the school. “We utilize the latest technology to create interaction and communication between each student, parent, and teacher, so our Wi-Fi network is a crucial component to our success,” said Mikael Westergård, director of Information Technology at Minervagymnasium. “In upgrading our Wi-Fi network to 802.11n, we wanted a Wi-Fi architecture that would provide us the most Wi-Fi bandwidth with the fewest amount of devices – that choice was Xirrus.” “The Xirrus 802.11abg+n Wi-Fi Arrays easily handle the 475 plus Apple Macbooks and iPhones roaming through our 4,100 square meters of classroom and office space,” added Westergård. “Within a few minutes of installing the Xirrus products, we had over 150 users associated to a single Array – try to do that with a traditional access point. We went from having a few hundred Megabits of Wi-Fi bandwidth to nearly 10 Gigabits with the Xirrus Wi-Fi Arrays – ample bandwidth for our school.” “It is great to see the students of Minervagymnasium using the network in the classrooms, hallways, and meeting areas,” said Peter Degelin, Regional Manager at Xirrus. “Organizations around the world are enjoying the benefits of Wi-Fi and many are realizing that only the Xirrus Wi-Fi Arraycan effectively replace switching to the desktop due to the power and intelligence of our unique architecture.”
